In terms of scale and aesthetic, the Gen 1 Soundwave blends pretty well with the Transformers Classics line. Gen 1 Soundwave stands almost the same height as Classics Megatron. The Soundblaster touch with the double-deep tape deck is a very cool added feature---just as is the presence of both Ravage and Laserbeak. Overtly servile, emotionless, Soundwave is logic-driven. He monitors and records everything, even to the extent that he interprets brain waves, which makes him unpopular among his Decepticon cohorts. Since Soundwave remains in spy mode 100% of the time, his only real friends are his cassette warriors. Ravage is one of the more memorable cassette warriors, a sleek and cunning predator armed with hip-mounted rockets. Laserbeak marks malignant efficiency, his original profile citing his overall cowardly, scavenging method of reconnaissance.

"Get the other reissue, if you can!" 2010-02-05

If you're looking for a Soundwave Reissue, hold off on this Toys R US version and look for the San Diego Comic Con version, if you can find it at a reasonable price.

Why? The Comic Con version comes with all four original cassettes, but more importantly, it has the original "flat" chest/cassette compartment (instead of the double-deep one from the later Japanese version, as this one has). The cassettes are also the original die-cast metal construction in the Comic Con reissue, without the quality complaints from the Toys R Us version.

That said, Soundwave is one of the best Transformers ever, with a really ingenious design and a very cool and iconic look. So by all means, get a G1 Soundwave reissue, of any version!

This is an excellent figure. His feet are die-cast, and his plastic is durable and heavy. One thing the images don't show you is the fact that his cassette deck area is expanded so he can hold two cassettes. He comes with Ravage and Laserbeak. Some parts of the figure have chrome, which is awesome. He is a bit pricey, and now that I have him, I wish he cost less, because fifty dollars for this is a bit too much. Overall, the figure and the cassettes are nice, and I highly recommend them.

"The Soundwave I Remember So Well!" 2009-11-05
By W. Ingram (Belmont, NC USA)
I made a dork move when buying this one.I bought two of these Souundwaves.I opened one and put the decals and doo-dads on it.I transformed Soundwave and the two cassettes,Ravage and Laserbeak. The other one stayed sealed and I locked it up nice in tight in my fireproof gun-safe.It's where I keep my other "original" Transformers and GIJOE toys.

So you get everything with this Soundwave. It is very accurate to the original except the plastic is thicker and sturdier which is a good thing actually. You don't worry as much about breaking the d--n thing. But to collectors,I have one suggestion.Do not put this toy in the hands of a 5 year old.It may end up in a hundred pieces or stuck in the mud in your backyard somewhere. I "HAD" a Optimus Prime re-issue a while back,I let a friend's kid hold it.This kid threw it on the concrete floor of a garage and it smashed into a thousand pieces.I made my friend write me a check for damages and needless to say,we are not friends anymore.

Overall, this commerative edition will satisfy your need to re-live your childhood in the 1980's with the best toys ever made.To collectors,I would also suggest that you pick up the 25th Anniversary Generation 1 Optimus Prime and the rare Masterpiece Edition of Generation 1 Megatron. The Masterpiece Megatron is "All Diecast Metal" and it has some small fragile parts. And you can also purchase the accessory pack on Amazon which by the way comes with a red LED gunsight. That "toy" should be handled carefully and kept in the original box.

I have all three of these editions and I will NEVER sell them to anyone,I just won't do it.So if you see great deals like this,do not second guess it,grab it immediately. You'll love it!

 "Awesome" 2008-11-27
By William Hoffknecht (Fernley, NV)
Soundwave is one of the reasons that the Transformers are the franchise that they are. I had one of these originals when I was a kid and I wanted another one, so I wanted another.

I took it out of the box, and upon the first transformation, I was giddy like a child. This toy looks great and is fun. If nothing else, you can take him, set him up in your cubical to protect your linux computer. =)

I love it, but I warn you, for most people he is not worth the price. For a child, this is really a hefty price tag.

Do not get me wrong, the kid will love it, but when he breaks (Which kids can break anything), you will suffer the buyers remorse on the price.

"Best transformer of its class" 2009-11-29
By Hook Huang
It took me quite some hesitation before I finally got this one - its price is significantly higher than the slightly lower class - the difference seems to be merely - this one comes with a tiny person who can ride in the car...

if you have had more than a couple of transformers toys you'd know that for a alt mode to actually have an operatable space inside is rare. It takes a lot more design. This one is quite up there. It is true that the robot mode has a weak body, with a very awkward loose connection on the back, however, trust me, it's still way up there. The figure looks flawless in car mode, and still one of the coolest ones in robot mode. This version is very different from the lower class model - worth the money.

Sideswipe does not have knees - his legs do not bend. Instead he has hydro shifts that enable his legs to extend or retract. He can make some darn good posts that give a moving impression. highly recommend this figure.

 "Pretty cool...." 2009-10-03
By N. Ott
I bought this toy at a local target. It seemed super cool as a car, but when I transformed it, IT was a little dissapointing. the Whole corvette part clunks up in the back, but it doesnt bother me since im more of a stop motion creator, and use things to hide it. after i transformed it back into a car, its leg thigh hits the ground, not letting any wheel touch the ground. its still really annoying, but thats what i get fo not looking at the instructions( or maybe not) hope this review helped!

 "H.A. Sideswipe" 2009-09-18
By Martin Stockwell
For this review, I will be looking at 4 things 1. vehicle mode- 2.robot mode- 3. transformation- 4. relations to the movie character- 5. the miniature that comes with him.

1. His vehicle mode is really nice. It has gullwing doors like on Lambos, painted break pads, the front lights are blue, the front grill is painted black, the Corvette insignia in the front is painted, and the exhoust is clear. The interior is not as good as BB's, but it is stil pretty good. VEHICLE mode-5/5

2. The robot is not as bad as people say but is not perfect. Legs look good and has a feel good transformation to it. Arms are good too. They don't look out of proportion, they look fitting. Now the torso, I know it looks like he is anorexic, but in reality, it doesn't look bad. Last is the back kibble. It looks okay?, but fortunately, it doesn't take much away from the figure unless you look at him from the back. ROBOT mode-4/5

3. Transformation is not very hard or educational. TRANSFORMATION-3 half/5

4. He looks not bad except for the back kibble. RELATE-3 half/5

5. Legs are too long, arms look fine, the head looks like a cartoon, and the torso is too short. MINATURE 3 half/5

OVERALL 4/5

"Slightly improved but could of been better" 2008-01-23
By Strider (Florida)
First of all the box Ironhide comes in is nice. It's one of those g1 classic boxes that they originally came in with the flap. But I would of atleast prefered it didn't have the flap. Since it either takes additional space or it gets bent. When you open the box on one of the box's side panels it reveals his cartoon head with chest. It's made out of cardboard. But I don't think it's durable at all. Supposely it goes where his head sticker on the seat goes. Atleast it is better than nothing. Decided to leave it there. The inserts is made of nice plastic velcro like all reissues. What really makes this toy is his red cherry Nissan vanette alt mode! The side design lines are painted this time along with his sun roof up top. His attack sled has three chrome track wheels which is the upper van halve. Which is one front wheel track ,and two back wheel tracks. There are 2 visible wheel tracks on the van side windows. With a missle launch post that folds which Ironhide stands on back of. While he's on the sled. In front of the sled you put a red cap on the hole where his gun goes. The red cap along with the chrome gun and three chrome missles are his accessories. But Ironhide can't hold any weapon that includes his gun. His fists don't have any holes. The robot is as small as a minibot and very spiney. His upper sled being the bigger mass of the two. The robot is a far cry from his animated self. His actual face is on back of the chest windshield being the not so appealing black and silverlining face sticker head that goes on the single chair there. The chair was for a diaclone driver figure to sit on it. You can't really blame the toy since it came years before the cartoon. Of course the regular sticker sheet is included along with the japanese written instructions. Atleast Hasbro and Takara could of made him an anime head sticker instead of that ugly lousy one. The red paint isn't all that good. It tends to chip on the chest and his feet. Which are made of metal diecast. The paint chipped in several places below his feet when I put his feet on the sled panels. The panels scraped off the paint there. I think I will never put him on the sled again. I rate encore g1 Ironhide, two and a half stars overall. Since it is a rare toy ,and a popular likable character with alot of screen time in the g1 show then it's a must have indeed! But be careful with his fragile paint. When handling him.

"Easier than some other models" 2009-12-29
By Charmaine Tilly (Castro Valley, CA)
We have several Optimus Prime models including one of the larger and more expensive ones. This one IS easier to transform in that there are only a few steps to do it. However, the parts do not click easily into place and it takes a few minutes of jamming and rejamming, and still I cannot get him to look perfect. The doors on the bottom keep opening no matter what you do. My 4 1/2 year old cannot transform this on his own at all and I needed to look up the picture online to do it myself.

If your kids are really into Transformers I would still recommend this line as the best for Transforming because they can be done in just a few minutes whereas some of the more complicated models can take me a lot longer.

 "Disappointing" 2009-12-21
By InvisibleMom (Southwest OK, USA)
This toy is very difficult to transform between robot and truck. Once it is in either form, it works ok. It rolls well and his joints move well in robot form. That being said, we have shed a lot of tears with this transformer. This toy frustrates my son (and me because I end up having to fix it). That being said, it is one of his favorites despite the fact that is definately not made for small hands (or mine!). If this is level 2 difficulty, I can't imagine a level 4!

 "SOMEBODY CALL A DOCTOR!" 2009-12-16
By Alexander Scott (Birmingham, AL)
I am a G1 fan and haven't seen either of the live-action films, but I do like the new transformers in the movie toylines. This is "Desert Tracker Ratchet", a Voyager class transformer from the second live-action movie, "Revenge of the Fallen." He is a redeco of a previous incarnation from the 2007 movie. Unfortunately, I am disappointed in this version of Ratchet due to its lack of durability. It's a shame because this is a very neat looking toy.

My first impression of Ratchet was as a camouflage Hummer (as packaged) when my son opened it. I think that Hummers are very neat looking vehicles, and Ratchet is no exception. It's a big, hulking vehicle that you could imagine clobbering someone with. That's one of my personal definitions of a good toy - when you hit someone with it, it should hurt. There's not a lot of detail or action going on in Ratchet's vehicle mode, although the roof rack is removable (so is the front grill, but I don't think it should be...)

I was a little nervous about working the transform from vehicle to robot. The arms and legs are solid and bulky, but the "backbone" (which I think is a transmission or suspension in vehicle mode) is very thin and felt somewhat fragile to me. Also, some of the movements were hard for me to do the first time without applying more pressure than I felt appropriate. His windshield folds out of the way in a manner that I find visually appealing. The final robot is big and solid, at least over most of the form. He has a secret axe that folds out of his arm, although I think it looks more like a giant cufflink.

My real problem with Ratchet is a fragility of joints that belies his rock-solid appearance. His front undercarriage flips away to reveal his head, but the joints are so loose that the part always falls off the robot. The door panels that make his wings (beyond the doors themselves) fall off constantly and are so loose at this point that a slight touch to the toy causes them to drop off. Unlike the undercarriage bit, this is quite visible in the vehicle mode, although neither one is necessary for the robot mode.

Ultimately, the vehicle mode and robot mode look very nice and are big and solid. Unfortunately, they are not sturdy and my son has an impressive pile of pieces that belong to Ratchet but won't stay on anymore. For a Voyager class figure, I expected better. I think the adult collector will find it an attractive piece, and maybe the youngsters will like it regardless of missing pieces (my son does)

"Much, much better than no Ratchet at all." 2009-08-29
By Robert D Wilson (Near Washington, D.C.)
Of the four Autobots that survived to the end of the first Transformers movie in 2007- Optimus Prime, Ratchet, Ironhide, and Bumblebee- Ratchet was the only one I didn't get in the Premium (extra-painted) series released towards the end of the first movie's toyline. This much shows in looking at him. His blocky vehicle mode makes him more of a mix between the blended-shrapnel look of the robots in the movie and the more traditional pile-of-blocks Transformers aesthetic. He looks less like the his screen incarnation than Transformers Movie 2 Leader Optimus Prime, Transformers Movie 2 Deluxe Bumblebee Figure, and even the oddly-colored retool Transformers Movie 2 Voyager Iron Hide. But he's all the Ratchet you get until the third movie comes along, so love him or leave him. I do like the desaturated "desert" green better than than the brighter hues of previous versions of this toy- it just seems more "Michael Bay-like". And the dark grey plastic replacing the previous black for his "metal bits" is fine by me; it puts him in a transitional area, colorwise, between Optimus Prime on one side (light grey "metal"), Ironhide on the other (all black, in the original paint color).

Don't get me wrong, he's a fine toy. His transformation scheme is fairly simple, yet with lots of nice clicky bits as you snap things together. He's got some parts that are prone to falling off- the rear bumper of his truck mode tends to pop off the back of his knees if you bend them too much, and the H2-labeled undercarriage that covers his robot head in vehicle mode hangs awfully loose on mine. And of course, any detachable weapon- like his roof rack/grabber claw assembly- has good odds of getting lost. But even minus all of these, he's still a big chunky robot that turns into a big chunky truck. And for the robot-loving, toy-car-driving little kid in your life- or in your heart- what more could you want?
