One of the most recognizable characters from the Transformers brand lore, Soundwave made a retro-comeback for San Diego Comic-Con in honor of the brand's 25th Anniversary. Hasbro has re-released the original 1984 edition of the figure that includes four of the Soundwave character's cassettes, two of which have not been released since the 80's. The cassette characters include Buzzsaw, Laserbeak, Ratbat and Ravage. The four figures fully convert between robot and cassette mode and fit into Soundwave when in cassette mode.

This is the Soundwave re-issue you want.

The other Toys R Us one comes with fewer cassettes, but worse, it comes with the weird double-deep chest-plate/cassette tray from the later Japanese versions. This version (Comicon reissue) comes with all 4 cassettes plus the original "flat" chest tray (different from the picture, which shows the Toys R Us reissue "chest"). Additionally, the cassettes have the original die-cast American G1 construction, with none of the complaints of the cheaper Toys R Us reissue quality. Ravage is especially awesome!

It is exactly like the original G1 soundwave, except the gun doesn't shoot. If you owned a G1 soundwave, you don't need to know much more-- this is the exact same toy, minus a spring in the gun. If you never owned a G1 soundwave, this is pretty much the slickest transformer ever.

Soundwave was not only in the first batch of Transformers ever released, he was actually a Transformer before they even existed! His original incarnation was as "Cassetteman", released by the Japanese toy company Microman, perhaps most famous in the US for little digital watches that could pop out a head and arms and "transform" into mini robots (Google "Cassetteman" for some interesting old ads). After Microman went bankrupt, Hasbro bought the US rights, slapped a Decepticon sticker on his chest, re-named him "Soundwave", and released him virtually unchanged as part of their new Transformers series. The original idea was a (fake) walkman that could turn into a belt-clip robot protector! The fact that this iconic toy started life as the brianchild of some anonymous designer making goofy no-name toys in Taiwan makes it that much cooler, I think.

Aside from the fact that he looks pretty rad, and was the face that inspired the Decpticon logo, his alt mode is exceptionally clever-- a genuinely to-scale micro-cassette player, where his guns become the batteries (they fit in the belt-clip-covered battery compartment, no less), and where his sidekicks turn into cassettes that fit in his chest "player", or into standard microcassette cases (4 included with this set). It's a really neat bit of design, and everything about the package "makes sense" in a way that does not always apply to Transformers. (Think of Optimus Prime's removable hands, rather pointless trailer "transformation" and "Roller"...)

As for the cassettes, Ravage (the panther) is simply one of the best transformers of the G1 era. He has really good articulation and posability, and the die-cast construction makes him feel heavy, solid, and nearly indestructible. The two condors (Buzzsaw and Laserbeak) are basically identical, with slightly different colors. Ratbat is a little goofy, but he figured large in the comic series, and completes the collection. All four have the original die-cast metal construction, making this a pretty impressive collection. You won't be disappointed!

this is a wonderful reissue i got this a few months ago and this is my 1st time owning the G1 Soundwave and this is the 1st time Ratbat been released in the us and this is great for any Die Hard G1 Fan this Soundwave only holds one tape even though its not the two tape deck version but i would recommend and the SDCC2009 Soundwave has 4 tapes and the hasbrotoyshop version only has two tapes.

This has to be one of the best reissues of Soundwave..next to the takara reissues that is.. great quality, i love the fact that he comes with ravange, the condors as well as ratbat. this is made for the collectors and rightfully so. i just wish his packaging was like the origial, but that a minor thing.

But these jokers charging 99 to 100 dollars (or more) is CRAZY!!! dont support these scalpers...Go to the hasbro site and get one.

This is a very nice reissue, but DO NOT buy it from these clowns. Go to the Hasbro site and get it for $40. These sellers are retarded!
